Quick Overview

Sending a child to French university requires applying through Parcoursup (central platform opening January) where students list up to 10 voeux (program choices) with motivation letters, then respond to offers from June. Apply for bourse sur critères sociaux (income-based grant up to €6,335/year plus tuition exemption) via DSE (Dossier Social Étudiant) January-May at messervices.etudiant.gouv.fr. Public university tuition is €170-600/year plus €100 CVEC campus contribution, vastly cheaper than private/grandes écoles (€3,000-15,000+). Student health coverage is automatic via Sécurité sociale. Apply for CROUS student housing and APL (housing aid) through the same DSE application.

How It Works

Sending Child to University in France

French higher education is highly accessible with low public university tuition (€170-600/year) and comprehensive student support. The process begins in Terminale (final high school year) with the Baccalauréat exam, whose results influence university admission. From January, students register on Parcoursup (parcoursup.fr), France's centralized application platform for most post-baccalaureate programs (excluding some grandes écoles). Students research programs via onisep.fr and university websites, then list up to 10 voeux (wishes/choices) by March, each requiring a lettre de motivation (motivation letter). Parcoursup uses no ranking - you list preferred programs without ordering. From June, the phase principale begins with universities sending offers (OUI, OUI-SI for conditional acceptance, EN ATTENTE for waiting list, or NON). Students must respond within tight deadlines (24 hours-few days). Simultaneously, apply for financial aid via DSE (Dossier Social Étudiant) at messervices.etudiant.gouv.fr between January-May: one application covers bourse sur critères sociaux (income-tested grant from €1,042-6,335/year in 8 tiers based on family income and distance from home) AND CROUS housing. Boursiers (grant recipients) also receive tuition and CVEC exemptions. Once accepted, complete inscription administrative at your university (July-September) paying CVEC (€100 campus life contribution) and minimal tuition. Students automatically join Sécurité sociale for healthcare (free). For housing, CROUS offers subsidized student residences (€200-600/month, applied via DSE) or private market with APL housing aid from CAF. The French system prioritizes equality of access through low costs and means-tested aid.
